Digital Scans Q & A

What is a digital scan?

A digital dental scan is a quick, outpatient procedure that uses 3D imaging technology and lasers to capture detailed images of your teeth, gums, and smile. By taking a dental scan, Dr. Popli and the team eliminate the need for dental impressions, saving you time and hassle.

There are several types of intraoral scanners on the market, but Dr. Popli and the team use the iTero® scanner. The iTero scanner is designed for your comfort. It provides high-quality digital impressions that are much more accurate than traditional ones.

How does a digital dental scan work?

At Tysons Laser Center Dentistry, Dr. Popli and the team perform dental scans on-site. Usually, the process takes less than 30 minutes. There’s no downtime or anesthesia required, so as soon as you’re finished, you can return to normal activities right away.

At the beginning of your appointment, Dr. Popli conducts an oral exam. Next, he uses a handheld device to capture enhanced digital impressions of your teeth and gums. To do this, Dr. Popli carefully runs a wand-like tool along each side of your mouth. The device emits laser energy that captures scans and uploads them to a computer program.

The laser technology is radiation-free, and the scanning procedure usually takes less than five minutes. The laser renders a perfect digital model of your teeth and gums that Dr. Popli and the team use to diagnose issues or develop a custom treatment plan.

What are the benefits of digital dental scanning?

Digital dental scanning provides various benefits, including:

  • No gooey mess associated with the impressions
  • Easier breathing and swallowing
  • No bad taste in your mouth
  • Immediate images
  • Faster delivery of dental restorations and orthodontic appliances

Digital dental scanning is also incredibly accurate. A single scan provides enough information to design and manufacture a restoration or an orthodontic appliance that fits perfectly.

Are digital dental scans safe?

Digital Dental scans with the iTero oral scanner are safe and generally well-tolerated. The machine doesn’t emit any ionizing radiation, so it’s considered less risky than traditional oral X-rays. What’s more, digital scans don’t use smelly or gooey putty, so there’s less risk of choking or breathing difficulties.
